From National Museum Wales, Cardiff:
Monet painted this view of the Palazzo Dario, near the mouth of the Grand Canal, in several sessions, probably during his 'troisième motif' between two and four o'clock in the afternoon. The upper storey and the left half of the fa?ade of the Palazzo Barbaro-Wolkoff next door are trimmed by the edges of the canvas- a compositional device derived from Japanese woodcuts. A gondola marks the dividing line between the palace and its reflection. Margaret Davies purchased this work in Paris in 1913.
